I wanted to post a few of my favorites from the last week of shooting. My week started out shooting boys soccer for the Idaho Press Tribune featuring Boise High and Skyview High. Here are a couple of my favorites from that night.

Next up was Friday Night Football, featuring Mountain View vs Nampa in a 5A battle. Even though the game ended up not being that close, I ended up with some great shots.

Last up was a cross-state battle between Bishop Manogue from Reno, Nevada and Bishop Kelly from Boise, Idaho. I wanted to call it the "Battle of the Bishops" but I was a little concerned I might catch some flack, so I decided to just use it in my blog. Here are some of my favorite images from that game.

A few of my favorites from last weekends Basque Soccer Friendly held in Boise at Albertsons Stadium. The soccer friendly featured La Liga's Athletic Club de Bilbao and Liga MX's Club Tijuana Xoloitzxuintles de Caliente. It was a blast shooting the event, and I have to say it was a little weird walking around Albertsons Stadium and walking on real grass!
The night ended up being a lot of fun and I made a few really good images. The event served as a brief primer for the upcoming high school and college soccer season which is just a month or so away. It's time to look at part 3 of my "Best Of" 2014-2015 which is going to highlight boys basketball. So far, the majority of my "Best Of" postings have been outside sports, which for the most part are easier photographs to take, at least from a technical perspective. The reason that I say that is outside, daylight photography allows for the use of more entry level equipment, cameras and lenses. When you move inside, the limits of a cheaper lens starts to bubble to the surface. A closed environment with poor lighting is the biggest challenge in shooting high school basketball. On the flip side, access is much easier and trust me, the opportunity to shoot basketball is almost never ending, there are multiple games almost every night. Lets take a look at a couple of shots.
This image comes from the state basketball tournament, which pitted Firth vs. West Jefferson. The image was taken using a Canon 7D Mark II and a Canon 70-200mm f/2,8 lens. The aperture was set at f/2.8, the shutter speed was 1/640 sec. at an ISO of 2000. Fortunately, the 7D Mark II does an exceptional job in poor lighting situations, but in reality, f/2.8 and an ISO of 2000 really isn't that bad when comparing high school gyms.
This shot pits Fruitland vs Shelley with the same equipment, although the camera settings are a bit more reflective of the poor lighting, ISO is 4000, shutter speed is 1/500 sec. and a aperture of f/2.8.
I love the action captured here and the effort being shown by the athletes face. This frame was captured when Grangeville faced Parma.
This image seemed to really capture the physicality of the match up between Kellogg and Weiser during the State Basketball Tournament.
In this action shot between Marsh Valley and South Fremont, I was sitting under the basket and used a Sigma 18-35mm lens which I added this year to my equipment bag. I like the wide angle perspective. It is nice to give a larger feel to the action and is a nice change of pace.
A nice perspective from sitting on the floor, allows for the face, ball and the hoop all in one shot.

One of my favorites from the past season. Captures the players face, the ball and the sideline and the extreme amount of effort that these athletes put out.
A final shot that sums up a great boys basketball season. I shot 14 boys high school basketball games over the season and had a blast doing it. When last I left off with my "Best Of" 2014-15 sports images, I said that the next post would be soccer. Well that is true but I am going to add a couple of softball images as well. So to get on with the soccer images, the sad thing is that in 2014-2105 season I only shot a couple of soccer games, but the couple that I did shot resulted in a couple of great images.
Just to set the scene, this is a early evening photo taken towards the end of the soccer season featuring a District soccer battle between cross town rivals Caldwell High School and Skyview High School from Napma. I used a Canon 7D with the shutter speed set to 1/2000 sec., and an ISO of 1000. I was using my Canon 300 f 2.8, set at 2.8.
There are at least three things that I require in almost every sports picture that I take. First the players eyes have to be in focus. In my humble opinion, the eyes and facial expressions are one the best ways to illustrate the emotions that sports brings to the surface of those that participate in sports. In this shot, the faces and the emotions that are captured tell the whole story.
My second sports requirement is that the ball be in the image. Sometimes this isn't an absolute requirement, but in this case it helps portray the excitement and explosiveness of the situation. Getting the ball and the faces in the same picture is just a matter of practice and understanding the sport you are shooting to know where the players and the ball will collide.
The last requirement of a good sports picture, in most cases, is the creamy, out of focus background. If you look at most action shots you will see that the action is frozen but the background is nice and blurry, sometimes it actually takes on a kind of abstract look all to its self. This image has both, the frozen action of the players is achieved by using a shutter speed of 1/2000 and the creamy background comes from a aperture setting of f/2.8.
Another shot from the same game noted above, with very similar settings, Canon 7D, shutter speed of 1/1600 sec., ISO of 1000 and using the same Canon 300mm lens with an aperture setting of f/2.8. All three elements combine into a great shot of emotions, action and the ball!
Next up are a couple of my favorite high school softball images from the the 2014-2015 season. These images all came from the District softball tournament action between Vallivue High School from Caldwell and Capital High School from Boise.
You have got to love the concentration and form that you see in pitchers and hitters. You will notice that most of the three principles I noted before apply here, the face and eyes, the ball and a creamy background. The background is more of a challenge in the second picture, so you do the best you can to make sure the background doesn't distract from the overall impact of your image.
This last image just kind of sums everything up. There is no ball and the background is nondescript, but the players face says it all, the joy of touching home plate after a home run at the district softball tournament. It doesn't get much better than that.

I have finally gotten around to looking back on the 2014-2015 high school sports seasons and have picked out a few of my favorites. I probably would not of done this except that www.Idahosports.com is putting together a "best of" piece and they had asked me for a few shots. Although I had 1000's of images to go through, I did manage to pick a few of my favorites. Since there are a few different sports, I am going to break this up into sport specific blogs. First up ... football.
The thing about year end reviews, or "best of" types of exercises is that by doing this it really got me fired up for the 2015-2016 season. Next up - Soccer!

Looking back at my 2014 football schedule, I shot 25 games including college and high school. Since there are only 98 days until the start of the 2015 football season, I figured that I had better get organized and see what the 2015 season was looking like. Well, from my initial review, things are looking like they will be as busy as last year.
As for Boise State, this year I will be covering 6 BSU games with opponents that include Washington, Idaho State, Hawai'i, Wyoming, New Mexico and Air Force. Hopefully I will get the opportunity to cover the Mountain West Conference Championship game as well this year.
Next up will be my coverage of University of Idaho.
For Idaho I will be making the trip to Moscow to cover the Vandals vs. Wofford State, Georgia Southern (which is Dad's weekend - always a good time), and Texas State. The trips to Moscow are always fun because I get to see my very studious daughter as well as shoot a little football.
As part of my master plan to dominate college football photography in the state of Idaho, I will also be covering 5 Idaho State University games this year.
For the Bengals, I will be covering their efforts against Black Hills State, Boise State, Portland State, Eastern Washington and Montana. Looks like the Bengals will have their work cut out for them, at least at the games that I am covering.
So my college slate is pretty full, but I will probably cover a number of high school games within the Treasure Valley in addition to High School State playoffs and hopefully a Mountain West Conference Championship game and the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. I will be busy but will be loving every minute of it while also hoping for no rainy cold nights.

Kylar is a senior from the class of 2015 at Timberline High School in Boise. We met up in Boise a few weeks ago to work on his senior pictures and since Kylar is a two sport athlete, we definitely had a sports oriented theme in mind. I had the opportunity to travel around Boise incorporating historic locations in and around Boise while working with a great family.
